Ocular Melanoma

When it comes to rare cancers like ocular melanoma (OM), building awareness is essential—but often overlooked. That’s why the work of A Cure In Sight stands out as truly groundbreaking. As the only independent organization dedicated solely to ocular melanoma patients and research, A Cure In Sight has consistently led the way in advocacy, education, and patient support. One of their most impactful contributions came in 2012, when they created the very first awareness ribbon for ocular melanoma.

Before 2012, there was no universally recognized symbol to represent OM. No ribbon. No colors. Nothing to help patients feel seen or rally support for their unique cancer journey. Recognizing the power of a symbol in unifying a community and sparking public conversation, A Cure In Sight took the initiative to change that narrative.

Rather than choosing the ribbon’s appearance internally, they turned to the people most affected: the patients, caregivers, survivors, and supporters. In a true act of community-driven advocacy, A Cure In Sight invited the OM community to vote on the ribbon colors. This inclusive approach ensured the final result would carry real meaning and reflect the voices of those it was created to represent.

The winning combination? Black and blue—a powerful pairing that tells a story. Black represents the seriousness and life-changing impact of the disease. Blue symbolizes unity, strength, and the unwavering hope that drives both patients and researchers toward a cure.

Since its creation, the black and blue ocular melanoma ribbon has become a powerful emblem of solidarity and strength. You’ll now find it on apparel, awareness materials, social media campaigns, and fundraising events across the globe. It’s more than just a ribbon—it’s a rallying point for a community that refuses to be invisible.

Thanks to the leadership of A Cure In Sight, what once had no visual identity now has a strong, unmistakable symbol. Their work continues to empower patients, fund vital research, and build awareness where it’s most needed.
